Remove Metadata from Android Photos: EXIF and GPS Guide

Learn how to remove metadata from Android photos, use Samsung's location controls, and handle GPS information Google Photos cannot remove.

· 5 min read

The Android photo privacy step people often miss

To remove metadata from Android photos, first identify whether you are changing an app's location label or cleaning information embedded in the image file. For camera-recorded GPS data, use a supported gallery removal feature or a metadata-cleaning tool, then inspect the copy you intend to share.

Google Photos cannot remove a location automatically added by your camera. It can edit or remove estimated locations and locations you added manually. Google's own documentation makes this distinction. Google Photos location help

That explains why a Remove location option may not solve the problem you expected it to solve. It also means that a tutorial for one Android phone may not fit another.

Choose the method that matches your goal

Your goal Starting point What to verify
Remove an estimated location in Google Photos Edit the estimated location in Google Photos The app's location record changed
Remove a location using Samsung Gallery Use the available location-editing controls The exact file you will share no longer exposes the location
Inspect and clean other supported photo metadata Use a metadata inspection and cleaning tool The result report and downloaded copy
Stop adding locations to new photos Review the Camera app's location setting A newly taken test photo

The goal is a reviewed sharing copy, not simply an empty location label on one screen.

Method 1: remove an estimated location in Google Photos

For an estimated location, open the photo's More menu, choose the location-editing control, then Remove location. This method does not remove camera-recorded coordinates.

To limit location recording in future pictures, review your Camera app's location setting. The setting varies by manufacturer. Google's instructions and limits

Method 2: remove location in Samsung Gallery

Samsung documents the following workflow for supported Galaxy devices:

  1. Open the picture in Gallery.
  2. Open the three-dot menu and choose Details.
  3. Choose Edit.
  4. Use the minus control beside the location.
  5. Save the change.

Samsung notes that screens and settings differ by device, software version, and carrier. If your phone does not show these controls, check the guidance for your model instead of assuming the feature is broken. Samsung Gallery instructions

Keep a backup before changing a valued original. Afterward, inspect the actual file you plan to share. A location edit should not be treated as proof that all camera, author, or other metadata has been removed.

Method 3: inspect and clean a photo in your browser

For a broader look at supported embedded fields, use MetaClean Pro from your Android browser.

  1. Select the image file you intend to distribute.
  2. Upload it for a free metadata inspection.
  3. Review any detected location, camera, author, or other fields.
  4. Sign in or create an account when you are ready to clean.
  5. Review the cleaning report and any remaining tags.
  6. Download the result and inspect that downloaded copy before sharing.

MetaClean Pro accepts JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, TIFF, and HEIC images, among its supported formats. Do not assume that a still-image workflow also cleans a separate motion or video component.

You receive one lifetime free successfully cleaned file with download per account, with no card required. A failed cleaning attempt does not consume it. You can download the same retained result again; cleaning a different file requires Pro after the trial is used.

Pro is $14.99 per year, with automatic annual renewal until canceled. Free accounts have a 10MB file limit; Pro supports files up to 50MB and batches of up to 20. See the plan details.

This is an upload-based service, not an offline cleaner. Files become eligible for deletion 24 hours after upload, and an hourly cleanup job removes them. Review the privacy policy, especially before uploading a work or sensitive personal image.

Check what leaves the phone

After downloading, open the result from your browser's downloads list or file manager. Give the sharing copy a recognizable filename so it is easy to distinguish from the camera original.

Before posting or attaching it, check:

  • The selected file: Are you sending the downloaded copy or the original from your gallery?
  • The metadata: Are the fields you wanted removed absent from the result?
  • The image: Does it look right, including orientation and color?
  • The visible details: Does the picture itself show something you meant to keep private?

For example, cleaning location tags from a photo of a parcel does not hide an address printed on its label. Make any necessary visual edits first, then inspect the final export.

Google also warns that people may infer a location from recognizable landmarks even when you do not share location details. Metadata cleanup reduces one kind of disclosure; it does not make a picture unidentifiable. Google Photos privacy explanation

Frequently asked questions

Why is there no Remove location button in Google Photos?

The location may have been written by the camera. Google Photos distinguishes that from estimated or manually added location information. See the official help linked above.

Is removing GPS the same as removing all EXIF data?

No. Treat GPS removal as a location-specific action. Inspect the file for any other fields you care about; see our EXIF field guide.

Can I clean the photo on a computer instead?

Yes. Transfer the file you want to clean and use an appropriate desktop or browser workflow. Our Mac guide and Windows 11 guide explain the review steps.

Inspect your Android photo before sharing to see which metadata fields are actually present.
